According to research presented at the Sociolinguistics Symposium this month, children are learning to use profanity — swearing — at an earlier age. And the researchers found children are also swearing more often than children did just a few decades ago.

Timothy Jay, a psychology professor at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, presented this data at the conference held earlier this month in the U.K.

Jay suggests the rise in profanity among children is not surprising, given the general rise of the use of swearing among adults during the same time period.

“By the time kids go to school now, they’re saying all the words that we try to protect them from on television,” says Jay. “We find their swearing really takes off between (ages) three and four.”

Kids aren’t learning swearing at an earlier age from the television they watch. The rise in cursing mirrors the rise in cursing among adults in the past thirty years that Professor Jay has been studying the psychology of swearing.

By what age do children recognise that plagiarism is wrong?

Thursday, 23 September 2010

To view plagiarism as an adult does, a child must combine several pieces of a puzzle: they need to understand that not everyone has access to all ideas; that people can create their own ideas; and that stealing an idea, like stealing physical property, is wrong.

There’s been plenty of research on children’s understanding of physical property ownership, which has shown that a rudimentary understanding is already in place by age two. Now in the first ever systematic study of its kind, Kristina Olson and Alex Shaw at Yale have investigated children’s understanding of the ownership of ideas.

Across three studies, Olson and Shaw presented children aged between three and eleven with vignettes and puppet videos in which two characters either both came up with their own idea for what to draw in art class, or one character copied what the other one had drawn. By age five to six, children showed less liking for characters who copied and rated them as ‘more bad’. Crucially, they gave copying as their justification for these negative appraisals. ‘These results demonstrate a relatively sophisticated understanding of ideas as early as age five years,’ the researchers said.

Some time ago, I sent a text message to someone I know. I casually asked where they’d been because I hadn’t heard from them in a while.

In response, I got a string of messages. Each new paragraph starts a new text message. They are posted below. The only changes that I made were to correct the spelling and to remove a few words that could identify aspects of the person and their drug of choice.

While I have this person’s verbal permission to post the messages, I think the theme is universal to drug addiction. Therefore, the message is best left gender neutral and anonymous.

***********

Me: Hey, where you been? Haven’t heard from you in forever.

Them: Cuz I dont feel like talking. Cuz I’m going no where in life and if I feel like shutting my phone off and locking myself in my house and even hiding my car cuz I don’t wanna talk, then I will.

It’s sad what drugs do. Because they’re so bad for you. And yet when you’re high, all your problems go away and you feel the weight of the world gone. Ok? When you’re not on drugs, all you ever can feel is the nasty, cold reality of the world…at your fingertips…on your shoulders. It’s sad because I will always want to get high.

Despite widespread efforts to educate the public of the neurobiological basis for mental illness, researchers have found no improvement in discrimination toward people suffering with serious mental health or substance abuse problems.

This is according to a new study by Indiana University and Columbia University.

The findings raise concerns regarding the effectiveness of mental health awareness campaigns. Recently, advocates have embraced the message of “this disease is like any other,” and hoped this point would be driven home to finally reduce stigma toward mental illness in the United States.

“Prejudice and discrimination in the U.S. aren’t moving,” said IU sociologist Bernice Pescosolido.

“In fact, in some cases, it may be increasing. It’s time to stand back and rethink our approach.”

For many Americans suffering with mental illness, a fear of stigma often keeps them from seeking the medical help they need.  When others find out, the sufferer can experience discrimination in employment, housing, medical care and social relationships, and this negatively affects the quality of life for these individuals and their loved ones.

The sun was shining, the weather was sweet, and John and Meredith felt like moving their dancing feet. As they were letting loose, Meredith slipped and fell. A thought shot through her mind that it was strange that she lost balance, but quickly got back up and after assuring John she was fine, they kept dancing. Luckily John was a neurologist and knew something didn’t seem right and so he took a step back and asked Meredith to do 3 things that saved her life.

He asked her to perform as simple acronym S.O.S:

  • Smile – If the person has not just suffered a stroke this should be no problem to do. However, if there is any brain injury, there may be a crooked smile.

  • Open/Reach – Usually opening both arms wide and raising them to the sky shouldn’t be a problem. If someone has suffered a stroke, one arm may start coming down or be disabled.

  • Speech – We speak simple sentences all the time, but a stroke victim may have slurred speech or confuse the wording. A sentence like, “What beautiful weather we have today” may not be as coherent.

Our society is noise-sick, partly because of low-level sounds

Snoezelen Room at the Nanaimo Association for Community Living helps many clients

It’s a world like no other, where mesmerizing bubbles dance through the air, a waterfall of fibreoptic strands cascade from the ceiling, and a sound-sensitive light strand magically reacts to noise.

With the controls at his fingertips, Stephen Vaughan changes the dancing blue bubbles in one of the floor to ceiling cylinders to red. It’s his favourite colour.

Once a week, Vaughan, 24, escapes into the multi-sensory studio to unwind and enjoy some freedom from his powered wheelchair as he is mechanically lifted into a bath of balls.

Hidden beneath the spheres, he waits for Susan James, the Snoezelen Room attendant, to break up the darkness with the glow from the fibreoptic strands.

Then he melts into his surroundings as he listens to background music of his favourite High School Musical soundtrack.

Vaughan, who has cerebral palsy, is just one in a growing number of adults and children who use the Snoezelen Room at the Nanaimo Association for Community Living for an hour of relaxation and escape every week. The room has an instant calming effect on clients who have a range of different disabilities and disorders or for those who just need to unwind.

Research reveals multi-sensory environments offer visual, auditory and kinesthetic benefits and the non-goal orientated space allows participants to interact freely as they see fit without any expectations.

The soothing benefits has led the NACL to develop an early intervention program for children with autism, which will begin in January.

Positive Relationships

by Michelle Gielan

An important relationship in my life just ended… and I’ll admit it, I didn’t really see it coming.  That event has sparked a lot of thinking about relationships in general, and why I value them as much as I do (I am happy I do!).  Having healthy, productive relationships with my family and friends is the most important thing to me in life. What I have come to more fully understand recently are the reasons why positive connections with others matter so much to me.

Positive, productive relationships demand the best of us. For a friendship or marriage to allow both people to flourish, each person is an active participant in helping create the other one’s positive future. Whether we are a friend, lover, daughter, or grandparent, each relationship gives us a chance to invest our energy in making another person’s reality better. Each of us needs to fully show up, be present, listen, express ourselves, and care for the other, and that requires time and attention.  When it all works out well, and we can see the happiness on the other’s face, that creates, at least for me, the best feeling of satisfaction in the world.

Relationships teach us about ourselves. Sometimes, for good or bad, the person standing in front of us can be a mirror showing us who we really are. If we don’t like something in them, there are chances we don’t like it in ourselves. Friendships also give us a chance to watch ourselves in action. We can, on a moment-to-moment basis, pay attention to what we are thinking, feeling, or doing in response to what is happening externally. We can plug into our life story anytime, and learn from it.

Do Opposites Attract?

Marina Edelman, MA Updated: Sep 22nd 2010

We all want to find love. But do we know a compatible mate when we see them or should we smell them? Do opposites really attract? Don’t we want someone with similar outlook on life and common interests?

In the past research has shown that as we fall in love, our brains experience a rise in dopamine and our sympathetic nervous system gets aroused as our blood pressure goes up. Simultaneously we begin to blush, feel butterflies in our bellies and become week in the knees. By discussing personal matter and maintaining eye contact we accelerate this feeling of arousal. A new dating site ScientificMatch.com is taking sexual chemistry to a new level by asserting that through DNA samples a better match can be made. Are they on to something? Recently a TV show called Dating in the Dark asked three women participants to smell the recently worn shirts of their three male counterparts and identify who they were drawn to. Does the nose know more than the eyes? A woman may be able to smell a man’s gene pool origins or major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes. Researchers have found that most people tend to be attracted to individuals who possess body odors that are unlike their own natural smell. An exception to that is a woman who is on the pill, her sense of smell changes and can therefore manipulate what scents she finds appealing.

When Your Husband Isn’t Like a Wall — He Is a Wall

By Daniel Tomasulo, Ph.D.

“The Great Wall of China’s attractive, but he’s too thick – my husband is sexier.”
– Eija-Riitta Eklöf-Berliner-Mauer,
The woman who married the Berlin Wall

Do objects have souls?

A few weeks ago my laptop’s battery was in trouble and I had to bring it in for a checkup. While the computer was being fixed my Blackberry simply stopped operating. I was frantic.

I felt betrayed by the objects I rely on, ‘love’ and care for. “Why is this happening to me?” was my new mantra.

One of my friends suggested that Mercury was in retrograde; another asked if I had done something to offend my favorite objects. We laughed, recalling a Woody Allen routine where his appliances are on the fritz and he hits them, and when he goes into the elevator the elevator asks if he was the one who roughed up the toaster.

We all have a connection to objects. The more contact we have with them, the more intimate our relationship, the more we ascribe to them human feelings and gender attributes. “The car died – she won’t turn over” and “I love my new phone” are common examples.

But where does it end?

I can honestly say I love the earth and mean it. I want to nurture and protect it and save it, and I’m committed. As the saying goes, good planets are hard to find. But I don’t feel there is reciprocity. I don’t think Earth is in love with me. The relationship is one-way. If I thought the earth was being friendly toward me, I would be engaging in animism, the term used for giving human qualities to inanimate objects. Adding sexual arousal and gratification to the dynamic, we have fetishes or paraphilias.

So, I admit I love the earth. But can you love the Berlin Wall? Psychologists are pondering a new classification, called objectophilia or objectum-sexuals. Outside of a few news reports and a few experts weighing in, little has been written about it. I found no clinical studies. But there is an official website for persons with Objectum Sexuality.

The Best Way to Meet Someone

It’s not a date, it’s an experiment in the lab of love

There’s a fantastic discussion on the science of dating over at Dr Petra that tackles how effective the techniques used by ‘scientific matching’ companies really are, and whether common dating advice is actually any good.

Petra recently ran a ‘Science of Pulling’ event at the British Science Festival (Americans: ‘pull’ is British slang meaning ‘to gently woo’) where she covered everything from how researchers actually go about studying couples to the myths of dating advice – in light of the extensive research on relationships.

 UK School

An autistic schoolboy who is in class for only an hour and a half each day is being discriminated against, according to his angry mother.

Brodi Nicol, a P6 pupil at Tayport Primary School, had his time in class slashed when he started becoming violent.

But a year on, his mum Charmain Miller is furious that his class time has yet to be built up as she says was agreed.

Charmain said Brodi, who was diagnosed with autism at around the same time as his school time was reduced, has stabilised since being prescribed medication.

She said, “Despite my best efforts his time has not been increased and he is falling behind his peers educationally and socially.

“I also recently found out from another parent that the rest of his class have been going on swimming lessons and school trips that Brodi has not been invited on.

“I believe he is being discriminated against because of his disability.”

Brodi’s autism means that he has trouble communicating and does not like change.

However, Charmain said he was quite intelligent and had an interest in history.

Incident at Petersburg school has autistic boy’s mother worried

September 23, 2010

Cumberland Times News

— My son is a special needs child at Petersburg Elementary School in Grant County, W.Va.

He is autistic, and has no fear of danger. He is supposed to have an aide at all times while at school. He has one on the bus, also. On Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m., I recieved a call from the school subsitute principal. He told me nothing was wrong, so I was relieved, but then he said, they had a small problem with my child that day.

I thought it was just his small classroom problem he had the week prior to this day … no, he was out on the playground and he wandered off, not sure where his aide was, but there was another aide out there with another child, so my child got out of sight, down along the dike (river) he went and ended up being caught finally between the Pizza Hut and McDonald’s on U.S. Route 220, which is at least a half mile from the school.

Remember, I said my son has no fear of danger. Well, there was the river, the back roads he went by, and then the main highway he got too … something bad could have come out of this. Would any parent in their right mind worry or be scared to send their child to school again? Well, I am one of those parents … but the ones that deal with him at school think I am going too far.

 The White House

By JIM ABRAMS (AP) – Fri 24 September 2010

WASHINGTON — Disabilities advocates on Thursday applauded Congress for passing legislation that eliminates the term “mental retardation” from federal laws.

“Changing how we talk about people with disabilities is a critical step in promoting and protecting their basic civil and human rights,” said Peter Berns, CEO of The Arc, an organization promoting the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The measure, passed by the House by voice vote Wednesday night, changes the phrase “mentally retarded” to “an individual with an intellectual disability” in existing health, education and labor law.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., sponsor of the bill with Sen Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., said it would make language in federal law consistent with that used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the health arm of the United Nations and the White House.

“This law is about families fighting for the respect and dignity of their loved ones,” Mikulski said. “This change will have a positive effect on more than 6 million Americans.”

“Rosa’s Law,” named after a Maryland girl with Down Syndrome, passed the Senate last month and now goes to President Barack Obama for his signature.

Bingham/Kennecott Mine

Bingham/Kennecott Mine: The Bingham Canyon Mine, also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. It is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.75 miles (1.2 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (7.7 km²). According to Kennecott, it is the world’s largest man-made excavation. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine.

Wildwood

Wildwood, Utah Valley: A beautiful day otherwise, the 10,000 foot Rockies block airflow, allowing a thick inversion layer to form over the Utah Valley. Because of this sea-like inversion layer, this location was ranked on one particular day last week as having the worst air quality in the nation. Despite this inversion, far away in the valley, the skiing at Sundance is absolutely amazing (where there’s nothing but great ski runs and blue skies).

GLIMPSE – the talents of the autism community

They are painters, sculptors and photographers; poets and storytellers; musicians and creators of amazing video games. They are kids, teens and adults. Last year, a new online publication arose to celebrate the talents of autistic individuals and other developmental disabilities: GLIMPSE, offered by ICDL (The Interdisciplinary Council of Developmental and Learning Disorders). In late 2008, Volume 2 of GLIMPSE was released, and was expanded into a print book and notecards. The works are serious, humourous, deeply personal and illuminating. See it for yourself, share it with others, submit your own/your child’s work for inclusion in Volume 3, to release later this year. Find information and ordering details at www.icdl.com

“World’s Greatest Dad”

Release Date: September 24, 2010 W’Wide

Official Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PkGTjZccNE

Synopsis: A thoughtful but outrageous comedy from Bobcat Goldthwait, WORLD’S GREATEST DAD is a story about a man that learns the things you want most may not be the things that make you happy, and that being lonely is not necessarily the same as being alone.

Robin Williams stars as Lance Clayton, a man who has learned to settle. He dreamed of being a rich and famous writer, but has only managed to make it as a high school poetry teacher. His only son Kyle (Daryl Sabara) is an insufferable jackass who won’t give his father the time of day. He is dating Claire (Alexie Gilmore), the school’s adorable art teacher, but she doesn’t want to get serious — or even acknowledge publicly that they are dating.

Then, in the wake of a freak accident, Lance suffers the worst tragedy and greatest opportunity of his life. He is suddenly faced with the possibility of all the fame, fortune and popularity he ever dreamed of, if he can only live with the knowledge of how he got there.

Written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, WORLD’S GREATEST DAD stars Robin Williams, Alexie Gilmore, Daryl Sabara, Geoff Pierson, Henry Simmons and Mitzi McCall. The film was produced by Tim Perrell, Howard Gertler, Sean McKittrick and Richard Kelly and co-produced by Sarah de Sa Rego.
