Berat, Albania
Berat, the “town of a thousand windows”, is an Albanian town inscribed on the World Heritage List since July 2008. The town is thought to be one of the oldest in Albania, with a settlement having existed there since at least the 6th century BC. The winding alleys on the castle hill and in the opposite quarter of Gorica are lined with 2-300 year-old stone buildings.

Skanderbeg, Tirana
Gjergj Kastrioti (1405-68), also known as Skanderbeg in English and Skenderbej in Albanian, is the only historical figure whom all Albanians agree was a national hero. He managed to create an independent Albanian princedom and keep if free for 25 long years. After his death, Albania was occupied by the Ottomans, but Skanderbeg’s legacy preserved the Albanian national identity throughout 500 years of Ottoman rule. Albanians consider him not only the father of their nation, but also the man who saved all Europe from the Ottoman Empire. The statue was unveiled in 1968, exactly 500 years after Skanderbeg’s death. Considering the era in which it was made, it’s surprising how little concession the sculptor made to official socialist-realist style.  Learn more re Tirana … http://www.inyourpocket.com/albania/tirana/sightseeing#at

Landscape in the Kukes Region
The Kukës region in northeastern Albania contains the country’s highest mountain range, the Korab, which rises to 9,027 feet (2,753 m). This mountainous enclave, bordered by the valley of the Drin river, has always been a pocket of resistance in terms of the kanun, a form of vendetta based on the old code of blood vengeance.” The northern clans, grouped into vast patriarchal families, have never stopped exercising this traditional right, which is more than 500 years old, despite all the political and judicial reforms that various ruling powers have implemented. Neither the Ottoman decrees, made from the sixteenth century to 1912, nor the laws of King Zog made between World Wars I and II have succeeded in putting an end to this tradition of the mountain people. Today, the kanun is still current—indeed, it has even seen something of a revival since the fall of Communism. It is estimated that 10,000 people are exposed to its pernicious influence to some degree. In 2002, between 150 and 800 children were deprived of schooling because their parents kept them confined to their homes, for fear that they might be killed or kidnapped.

Albanian Mosaic
Albanian Mosaic as seen on National History Museum facade in Tirana – Albania’s history from the mid-Palaeolithic to the present time can be seen in the National History Museum, the largest in Albania. The museum was inaugurated in 1981. It covers the Middle Ages, the National Revival, the Independence period, the World Wars, as well as areas devoted to antiquity, dictatorship, ethnography and iconography. The museum has some of the finest samples of art on display. Here you can see the Gllavenica Epitaph, which is gold and silver thread embroidery of Jesus, handcrafted on silk. The piece dates back to 1373. Also on display are the bust of Dea (Butrinti’s Goddess, today identified by Apollo’s head) and the Bukuroshja e Durrësit (The Beauty of Durrës) mosaic. Repeated looting in the 1990s has robbed the museum of many artefacts, but it remains the best place in Albania to absorb history and to view beautiful finds from the many archeological sites across the country. A new hall focuses on the years around the Second World War and the resistance movements, while the museum ends with a harrowing exhibition about Albania’s gruesome labour camp system and the thousands of men and women who were swallowed by it.

Blue Eye Spring (Syri Kaltër) is about half an hour’s drive from Saranda in South-East Albania. The ice-cold water bubbles up from a deep pool of at least 50-metres in depth(divers have gone that far but it is believed to be at least 150 m).

GLIMPSE – the talents of the autism community

They are painters, sculptors and photographers; poets and storytellers; musicians and creators of amazing video games. They are kids, teens and adults. Last year, a new online publication arose to celebrate the talents of autistic individuals and other developmental disabilities: GLIMPSE, offered by ICDL (The Interdisciplinary Council of Developmental and Learning Disorders). In late 2008, Volume 2 of GLIMPSE was released, and was expanded into a print book and notecards. The works are serious, humourous, deeply personal and illuminating. See it for yourself, share it with others, submit your own/your child’s work for inclusion in Volume 3, to release later this year. Find information and ordering details at www.icdl.com

“For Akiva Goldsman, a beautiful turnaround … “I grew up, essentially, in one of the very first group homes for what was then termed as ’emotionally disturbed children’ — these were days when, unimaginably, childhood schizophrenia and autism were lumped together in the same population,” Goldsman said. “My parents founded this home, and I grew up there in this brownstone in Brooklyn Heights and my peers were, um, crazy. My definition of sanity is very labile; it’s flexible and open.””:
