HARDWORKING, dedicated, punctual and honest: Allan Bryte has what it takes to be a great employee.
But the Cranbourne 19-year-old has been looking for a job for almost four years.
And the reason he hasn’t been hired, he said, is because he has Aspergers syndrome, a form of autism.
People with Aspergers can sometimes show difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests.
Mr Bryte said employers didn’t understand the condition and were reluctant to hire him.
“Usually people with Aspergers can be brilliant at one thing but hopeless at something else,†he said.
“I’m really bad at maths but I fixate on gardening, art, drawing and technology.â€
Mr Bryte said he had covered all job seeking avenues including enrolling in several government and non-government employment agencies, volunteering and work experience.
He even spent his entire savings of $4000 on 120 driving lessons so he could add a licence to his resume.
“I just want to be independent, save up for a car, get my own place one day,†he said. “And believe it or not, I want to be able to pay bills.â€
From retail to information technologies to a gardening apprenticeship, Mr Bryte said he is prepared to do anything to secure long-term employment. “I just want to be given a chance,†he said.
