 Stary Most(Old Bridge), Mostar

Stari Most (Old Bridge) Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina – During the Croat-Bosnian Conflict (1991-93) this bridge was completely destroyed. After the end of the war, the bridge was reconstructed as a symbol of peace and ethnic harmony. It was rebuilt with the same materials and original techniques. Stari Most (The Old Bridge) is a 16th century bridge in the city of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, that crosses the river Neretva and connects the two parts of the city. The Old Bridge stood for 427 years, until the bridge was destroyed on November 9, 1993 during the Bosnian War. Slobodan Praljak, the commander of the Croatian Defence Council, is currently on trial at the ICTY for ordering the destruction of the bridge, among other charges. Consequently, a project was set in motion to rebuild it, and the new bridge opened on July 23, 2004.  UNESCO World Heritage Site

 Medieval tombstones in Bosnia

Medieval tombstones in Bosnia: The tombstones were associated with the native Bosnian Church. Crkva bosanska, ecclesia bosniensis is historically thought to be an indigenous branch of the Bogomils that existed in Bosnia during the Middle Ages. Adherents of the church called themselves simply Krstjani (“Christians”). The church no longer exists.

Letter from Bosnia - Girls Eating Sweets

A group of girls eat sweets given to them by Heartfelt volunteers. After 3 years of war, Bugojno, is still under attack. The large town in central Bosnia has suffered three years of continual bombardment and internal fighting that has left the area a distinctive mix of destroyed homes, refugee settlements and a desperate but determined local population. At the beginning of 1994 a small group of British volunteers decided to try and do something for those they saw suffering on the television. After collecting medical Aid and food they set off in their own vehicles over land to Bosnia under the name Heartfelt. Heartfelt is continuing to provide skills, equipment and medical supplies to the people of Bugojno. Every three months a new convoy leaves the UK with new drivers carrying aid raised and donated by British Volunteers. 15/05/2006, Bugojno, Bosnia.

GLIMPSE – the talents of the autism community

They are painters, sculptors and photographers; poets and storytellers; musicians and creators of amazing video games. They are kids, teens and adults. Last year, a new online publication arose to celebrate the talents of autistic individuals and other developmental disabilities: GLIMPSE, offered by ICDL (The Interdisciplinary Council of Developmental and Learning Disorders). In late 2008, Volume 2 of GLIMPSE was released, and was expanded into a print book and notecards. The works are serious, humourous, deeply personal and illuminating. See it for yourself, share it with others, submit your own/your child’s work for inclusion in Volume 3, to release later this year. Find information and ordering details at www.icdl.com

In this first installment in the two-part epic, Harry’s final adventure begins. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART I marks the third Potter film for Yates, who also helmed HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX and HARRY POTTER AND THE HALFBLOOD PRINCE.

Hope you are all doing well. It’s that time of the year here where summer’s upon us and things are winding down. In a week’s time, we’ll be heading off travelling for awhile. Gin has completed her psychology studies and is heading to California next Monday, for the summer, where she’ll be working as a Counselor for children aged from 6 to 17 years. Apologies for a bit of a delay with the next Newsletter, which I’ll post around the 1st July.

Till then,

Take Care,

Julie
