ASAN January Update
Dear friends,
Â
The New Years’ confetti had barely settled by the time our work started in 2017 – and you were right there with us. Less than two weeks into the new year, the Senate took the first steps toward repealing the Affordable Care Act. Since then, you’ve mobilized to defend our health care, calling Senate Committees and asking them not to repeal the Affordable Care Act without a replacement plan in place – and it’s working. We won’t stop fighting to defend our health care, and we’re so grateful that you’re in this fight with us.
We know that our community does our best work when we’re equipped with the tools we need to fight for meaningful change. This month, we’re not just fighting for the present; we’re preparing for the future. Applications are now available for our 2017 Autism Campus Inclusion Summer Leadership Academy, a week-long advocacy training that culminates in a day of legislator visits on Capitol Hill – where participants put their new advocacy skills into action. We’re also pleased to announce the recipients of our 2017 Autistic Scholars Fellowship, a project that supports Autistic college students who demonstrate a commitment to disability rights advocacy.
Â
We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us in 2017. But if this first month was any indication, we know we can count on your support when it matters the most. We’re making sure that as laws that impact our community are being debated, these words ring through the halls of power: Nothing About Us Without Us!
With gratitude,
Julia Bascom
