O'Rourke's Diner

O’Rourke’s Diner ~ Located on Main Street in Middletown’s North End, O’Rourke’s has been a landmark for over 65 years. After suffering a devastating fire in August of 2006, the diner was refurbished and reopened in February, 2008.

O’Rourke’s is a diner with a difference. Dating back to 1946, it serves classic diner fare as well as serious good cooking from Chef Brian O’Rourke, nephew of the founder. It is one of the few places in Connecticut to sample that rare specialty, a steamed cheeseburger.

GLIMPSE – the talents of the autism community

They are painters, sculptors and photographers; poets and storytellers; musicians and creators of amazing video games. They are kids, teens and adults. Last year, a new online publication arose to celebrate the talents of autistic individuals and other developmental disabilities: GLIMPSE, offered by ICDL (The Interdisciplinary Council of Developmental and Learning Disorders). In late 2008, Volume 2 of GLIMPSE was released, and was expanded into a print book and notecards. The works are serious, humourous, deeply personal and illuminating. See it for yourself, share it with others, submit your own/your child’s work for inclusion in Volume 3, to release later this year. Find information and ordering details at www.icdl.com

Back cover blurb:

Liam Creedy is in the final year of school at Patrick Freeman High. It has not been the best of experiences and this time the bullies have gone too far; one push too many leaves him unconscious.

When he wakes, he finds himself in a strange parody of school life – the building has no main exit, the classrooms have become work places, the prefects are police, and no one ever mentions their parents.

Now everything is in black and white, everything except Liam and Mr Samson, the boy’s aloof and mysterious guide in this nightmare world.

But what has happened to Liam? Has he slipped into a parallel world? Is he really in a coma lying on a hospital bed? Or is he dead and in some place of limbo?

As tension builds and the school moves nearer and nearer to all out war, Samson presses Liam to find the blueprint and change it – only then will he find the way out.

Will Hadcroft weaves a tale that dares to confront one’s right to be an individual in a world that demands conformity and uniformity. He questions the education system, the roles we are pressured to play in society, and the need to challenge accepted norms before it is too late.

Florence Griswold Museum, CT

The Florence Griswold House is a National Historic Landmark. Designed by Samuel Belcher, architect of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, and built for William Noyes in 1817, the Late Georgian-style mansion reflects the affluent, formal style of living during Old Lyme’s maritime era. The period rooms rekindle the spirit of another life and time. http://www.flogris.org/
