“Karen Heller: Camphill School ‘an amazing blessing … To visit the campus is to fall in love. Children with IQs of 70 or lower, many with autism, children who struggled in other settings, can be seen dancing, playing, studying, working. There’s a farm, a homeopathic center, multiple performing spaces, gardens, horses, and Beulah, the extremely fertile Yorkshire White and Hampshire pig. “We remove all the institutional aspects, all the walls. Many of them learn better not being behind a desk,” says development director Guy Alma, a 20-year Camphill veteran. “We don’t treat them as patients, but human beings.” Many parents melt in tears when they first visit, overwhelmed by the approach, the care, the setting, the comprehensive staffing.”:

Waimea Bay

Waimea Bay – In Summer, Waimea Bay is a playground of fun for freedivers, S.C.U.B.A. divers, and those who desire to jump off “da Big Rock” or “Jump Rock” – a rock that is perfectly positioned in the bay (for use at your own risk!). You can also find rock climbers practicing their skills on the cliff and in the dry cave on the beach. The Bay- as well as Three Tables, Pupukea, & Shark’s Cove- are protected waters. The diversity of life in these waters is astounding. Waimea Bay is one of the filming locations used for the television series Lost, which is an American drama-adventure television series surrounding the survivors of a plane crash on a mysterious tropical island. (The location of the downed plane – not there anymore – is Mokuleia at the end of Dillingham airstrip almost to road’s end at Ka Ena Point.)

Manta Ray and Cleaner Wrasse – This Manta Ray (Manta birostris) was moving slowly over a cleaning station at a depth of about 16 metres just off Honokohau on the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawai’i.  Byodo-In Temple

Byodo-In Temple Oahu – The Byodo-In Temple situated at Valley of the Temples Memorial Park was established on June 7, 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawai‘i. The Byodo-In is a replica of the 950 year-old Buddhist temple in Japan, which was converted from a villa in the year 1053.

Pacific Aviation Museum, Pearl Harbour

Pacific Aviation Museum, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii: This very aircraft was up in the air training a lawyer from Honolulu with an instructor the same day that Japan struck Pearl Harbor during WWII, and encountered them head-on having to take evasive manoeuvres downward and still got shot; obviously, however, the Japanese had no interest in taking the time to shoot down one small training plane so the instructor and student ended up watching the massive fleet of aircraft continue on to tear apart Pearl Harbor.

GLIMPSE – the talents of the autism community

They are painters, sculptors and photographers; poets and storytellers; musicians and creators of amazing video games. They are kids, teens and adults. Last year, a new online publication arose to celebrate the talents of autistic individuals and other developmental disabilities: GLIMPSE, offered by ICDL (The Interdisciplinary Council of Developmental and Learning Disorders). In late 2008, Volume 2 of GLIMPSE was released, and was expanded into a print book and notecards. The works are serious, humourous, deeply personal and illuminating. See it for yourself, share it with others, submit your own/your child’s work for inclusion in Volume 3, to release later this year. Find information and ordering details at www.icdl.com

“Movie magic makes Pittsfield premiere … Meanwhile, Dennis Connors, a New Jersey resident, was honored on Saturday at the Beacon as the winner of the Next Great Filmmaker Award for his documentary “Breaking Boundaries; The Art of Alex Masket.” Shot over a year-and-a-half period, the short film chronicled the work of Masket, an untrained and autistic artist. “I would watch [Masket] and wonder, ‘How is he doing this?’ ” said Connors, of what drew him to the project.”:

CINEMA

“Toy Story 3”

Release Date: June 18, 2010

Official Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0SXH_3XcMo

Synopsis: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and the the all-star casts of TOY STORY and its sequel return for a third outing as the voices of Pixar’s beloved toys. Lee Unkrich, a co-director on TOY STORY 2 and FINDING NEMO, takes the reins for this third film, while LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE screenwriter Michael Arndt pens all the action. This time around, Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the toys have their adventures in Disney Digital 3-D.

Consensus: Deftly blending comedy, adventure, and honest emotion, Toy Story 3 is a rare second sequel that really works.

“Knight and Day”

Release Date: June 23, 2010.

Official Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCWrFNsRIJQ

Synopsis: A fugitive couple (Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz) wages a war between truth and trust while speeding across the globe in an attempt to avoid capture by a determined federal agent (Peter Sarsgaard). Paul Dano, Viola Davis, Olivier Martinez, Maggie Grace, and Marc Blucas co-star.

Consensus: It’s pure formula, but thanks to its breezy pace and a pair of charming performances from Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, Knight and Day offers some agreeably middle-of-the-road summer action.
